WHEELCHAIR SKILLS NOT EASY
AYPD 5x60 Officers Maxine Boobyer and David Lewis were asked to come up with a practical way to help students at Brynteg Comprehensive School appreciate the problems faced by competing in a wheelchair sport.
They came up with the idea of running a wheelchair basketball session using wheelchairs borrowed from Neath Port Talbot Sports Development Department.
There were 15 students who took part overall. The session began with a regular game of basketball as a warm up. The students were introduced to the wheelchairs and allowed to practice skills in the chairs followed by relay races and then ball races. The students could not believe how difficult it was to use the wheelchair, they found it very hard to shoot from a sitting position and to manoeuvre the chair.
It was a highly successful and enjoyable experience which gave them an insight into a disabled athlete’s world.
